August 15th: Attend the world-famous Festa da Boa Morte festival in the beautiful town of Cachoeira. Once Brazil’s second most important economic center for three centuries, Cachoeira’s streets are steeped in the history of Afro-Brazilian culture. The festival is organized by the Irmandade da Boa Morte (Sisterhood of Good Death), an all-women society whose members are direct descendants of African slaves. The festival incorporates traditions from Condomble and Christianity to pay homage to the Virgin Mary and her assumption to heaven, in addition to the liberation of slaves. Highlights include a procession through the streets of Cachoeira and along the banks of the Paraguacu river, music and endless hours of Samba de Roda. The festival is one of the most spectacular tributes in the world to the African Diaspora. August 18th: Lencois. I feel like our group was given such a broad exposure to so much more of Bahia than just the usual "tourist" route. I loved how everyplace we turned, a Bahian would be greeting us with open arms and a big smile, because we were guests with Bahia in Motion. Our Samba de Roda on the beach in Boipeba at sunset was like a dream...My favorite part was Salvador and the dancing! I felt challenged to the MAX, but I loved how quickly our group was integrated into the life at the Escola. By the time we took our last class..I felt like we were gaining acceptance by the other students. It was such a great feeling!" -Sherry H. "I've traveled to many wonderful places around the world. Bahia in Motion's trip to Bahia was definitely one of my favorites! The people, the music, the food, the beaches, the architecture, were all wonderful. I'd go again in a heartbeat. As an independent traveler, I was a little leary of going on an organized trip, but it turned out to be a blessing. Aileen and Daniel organized everything so well - you didn't have to think about anything, just enjoy. Since Daniel is a native of Bahia, and Aileen lived there extensively, you get a real insider's view of things; much better than just being a tourist." -Lisa P. "Traveling with these guys had a very 'insider' feel to it. Aside from all the great sights and events they organized I also got to experience Brazil in a very intimate and personal way. This to me is what really stands out from my trip with Daniel and Aileen. I got an inside view of the culture and the people. Even while stretching to take in all the new and diverse experiences I felt surprisingly welcome and at home. The opportunity to interact with the people there and make new friends was a highlight for me (without even mentioning all the incredible music, food, dancing, sights and sounds). I would love to go back to each place we visited and I do plan to travel with them again." -Kevin C. |
