Join us as we explore the roots of Samba Reggae and lead you through very basic, easy-to-follow steps. Samba Reggae is a form of music, dance and resistance born in Salvador, Bahia Brazil during the Civil Rights movement. Its music combines West African and Caribbean rhythms to create a hypnotic-like swing that Afro-Brazilians have been parading to for decades as part of protests and Black Pride demonstrations. Resistance and joy unite in this unique music and dance experience. Original recordings by Mestre Jackson, one of the great musicians responsible for the proliferation of Samba Reggae throughout the world, will accompany us throughout our class in addition to other original works from Bahian masters.

Music has always been a way for Afro-Brazilians to resist racial oppression and discrimination and continues to be a symbol of black consciousness and social justice. Mestre Jackson is one of the founding fathers of the Samba Reggae rhythm and was one of the first leaders of Olodum. He has performed around the world with artists including Paul Simon, Daniela Mercury, Carlinhos Brown, Timbalada, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Toni Mola. Mestre Jackson's current work includes leading programs as a musical educator for at-risk youth in Salvador's poorest neighborhoods.
All Levels Welcome! If you're attending virtually, Please bring a ceramic plate/mug, fork/spoon, bucket and sticks to class and/or any percussion instrument you may have at home including Ago-go, Surdo, Caixa, Timbal, Conga, Atabaque.

Elements of Afro-Brazilian dance will include Afro, Afoxe, Ijexa and Orixa dance movement. The Samba Reggae rhythm emerged out of the Civil Rights and Black Pride movements. Samba Reggae is a symbol of Afro-Brazilian pride and plays a very important role in the identity of Afro-Brazilians today. Its rhythms are powerful, joyful and uplifting. The historical contexts of both of these Brazilian dance forms will be discussed. Get ready to dance, sway, sweat and smile!

A native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Rosangela Silvestre is internationally known as one of the great visionaries of Afro-Brazilian dance. Trained in classical ballet and modern dance, she has traveled to India, Egypt, Senegal and Cuba to research dance and develop her ever-evolving and eclectic palette of movement. Over the last 3 decades, Rosangela has taught and performed around the globe. She has choreographed for Bale Folclorico da Bahia, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico Repertory Company, American Academy of Ballet, Roots of Brazil, DanceBrazil, Viver Brasil, Munto Dance Theater, and the Kendra Kimbrough Dance Company.

AFRO-BRAZILIAN MASTER CLASS with WORLD-RENOWNED VERA PASSOS...LIVE from BAHIA, BRAZIL!
A native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Vera Passos is an accomplished dancer, choreographer, performer and ambassador of Afro-Brazilian culture. With extensive training in modern dance, ballet, jazz, contemporary and traditional folkloric dance, she has performed internationally with Africa Poesia, Jorge Silva Dance Company, Viver Brasil, and was a soloist dancer of the acclaimed Bale Folclorico da Bahia. Vera is the protege of the Silvestre Technique and is currently the director of Silvestre Link Bahia. With Rosangela Silvestre, she leads annual month-long Silvestre dance trainings in Brazil and other workshops around the globe throughout the year. She is currently the Associate Artistic Director of Viver Brasil Dance Company in Los Angeles, CA.

STG’s signature dance program, the 21st Annual DANCE This Performance, brings together youth and adult performers from diverse communities for collaboration and to share their culture through the art of dance. Celebrating over 20 years of collaboration, performers get the unique opportunity to work with each other and with renowned international dance artists for an experience that increases professional acumen and makes lasting memories. Past guest artists have included Broadway professionals, New York and L.A. award-winning dancers, the Joffrey Ballet, and Savion Glover to name a few.

DANCE This Intensive

The DANCE This Intensive is an opportunity for young dancers (ages 13-21) at all levels to immerse themselves in dance over the course of one week. Students will be exposed to a wide range of dance styles and techniques in a supportive, yet challenging atmosphere.
The World Rhythm Festival is a full weekend immersion in world music, drum and dance. Join us for a festival packed with an amazing range of world music traditions including African, Middle-Eastern, Latin, Indian, Brazilian, North American, and more.
